Jay Blades: Learning to Read at 51
  • Following Jay over six months of learning, this intimate and revealing film goes behind closed doors to see how he organizes his upholstery business without the written word, manages on The Repair Shop without scripts and struggles each day with his vowels and consonants as he tries to learn phonics. We meet Jay’s girlfriend Lisa, his daughter Zola and his ‘adopted’ family who all help him with his reading challenge. Jay also meets school pupils and adults who struggle with reading and writing, as he discovers the human stories behind the nation’s literacy statistics.

  • Jay Blades opens the doors to his brand new workshop in Bradford. In each episode, members of the public nominate local heroes from across Yorkshire to receive a bespoke, handmade piece of wooden furniture to recognise the work they do for their community, often going above and beyond. Jay hears first-hand what makes each local hero special and why they are deserving of this thank you.

  • Jay Blades shares personal tips and tricks to help viewers become self-sufficient in their own homes. Jay demonstrates how we can all become a bit more handy at home through a range of simple demonstrations from his own workshop. Aided by a rich catalogue of BBC home and garden archive, viewers are guided through ways to tackle outstanding tasks and encouraged to try something new.
